Dysbiosis
February 13, 2004
Dear Parents Some interesting developments recently in our management programme, particularly in the area of Dysbiosis (abnormal bacterial and/or fungal growth in the intestine. Approximately 80% of Autistic children have diarrhoea, 10% have constipation and about 10% have normal stool consistency. We find that the majority of children with chronic diarrhoea have overgrowth of Clostridium Difficile and usually Candida as well, and The majority of children with constipation have an overgrowth of Bacteroides. These 'bugs' produce toxins (peptides) which leak through the bowel wall into the bloodstream and affect the function of the brain. We have found that identifying and eradicating these bacteria and yeasts makes a huge difference to a child's progress. Interestingly, a high percentage of adults with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) have an overgrowth of Clostridium Difficile and also benefit from eradication therapy. More information is available on our website under Autism and Dysbiosis. Please call or email if you have any questions to ask.
Best wishes David Patterson MD
