August 2004 Dear Parent, As you may know the DAN! Organisation (www.autism.com/ari/dan ) meets twice a year and considers the recent developments in research and therapy for ASD. The last two meetings (October ‘03 and April ‘04) have really focussed our approaches to therapy and these are really improving outcomes for our children. I have re-written our management protocol and we will be publishing this on our web-site in the near future. In the meantime if you would like a copy e-mailed or posted, please e-mail or telephone our office. It is a 22-page document with some very important therapy modifications as well as a consolidation of established therapy. In addition, there are several important scientific discoveries in the field of the cause of ASD which are explained in the document. Briefly, the problem begins with a genetic vulnerability and this vulnerability is exposed by metals in the environment, in vaccines and in maternal blood. What happens next can vary slightly from one child to another but in over 80% of children there is damage to the digestive system nervous system immune system - as well as interference in the normal developmental pathways. These areas of damage lead to important consequences such as alteration in the balance of intestinal bacteria and yeasts, incomplete protein digestion, shut-down in some areas of the brain and multiple mineral and vitamin imbalances. Some simple detective work can be done (hair and poo analysis) to find out what damage may have occurred and to plan an individual child’s management - all of this is explained in our document. Particularly if your child has been receiving biomedical intervention (Secrenase, Vitamin therapy and so on) for some time and progress has been disappointing; then we have ‘missed’ some important clues and may need to go back and revise treatment (including diet) and perhaps carry out some tests. We look forward to hearing from you,
Best wishes
David Patterson (MD) Secrenase
