Dietary Strategies well worth considering
October 21, 2004
Secrenase October Newsletter Dietary strategies well worth considering The benefit to the majority (80%) of children from introducing a strict Gluten-free and / or a Casein-free diet has been well-documented. [ Paul Shattock and Karyn Seroussi - www.autismndi.com ] Only about 10% of children show 'positive' when tested for food allergies or intolerances; yet 80% benefit from the diets. Other items to consider are: Stop or restrict citrus fruits including apples and oranges. These fruits contain what are called 'phenolic' compounds which bind sulphur. Children with ASD lack sulphur ions and these are needed for the proper digestion of food (see web page on 'peptides'). Incomplete digestion of proteins produces high levels of peptides in the blood ( Caso-morphin and Gluteo-morphin - see web page on 'peptides' ). Cranberries and cranberry juice are rich in sulphur, so well-worth trying to get your child to eat the fruit or drink the juice. ( Cranberry juice is an excellent 'disguise' to get the supplements in as well ). Self-injurious behaviour (biting, hitting head against things) has been linked to a lack of calcium, so well-worth giving supplements - we routinely recommend this as past of our therapy. Molybdenum also helps to get digestive enzymes (peptidases) working properly; again we routinely recommend and give this to our clients as well as zinc, magnesium and vitamin B6 - all of which have a very positive effect on therapeutic outcome in our children. Finally, most ASD children are deficient in GLA ( Gamma Linoleic Acid - Omega-3 oil). We have recently 'switched' from fish oil to Flax seed oil since this contains more than twice as much Omega-3 as fish, and tastes a whole lot better !
